Edward Jenner Heritage Trail - Location 4
White Hart Court, 6 & 8 High Street
It is likely that Jenner would have arrived and departed from this former coaching inn when he made his journey to London in 1770 to begin his medical training at St George’s Hospital. It is now known as the White Hart Court. Even earlier it was probably the Ivy Bush (though this name is not included in the original documents for number 06 High Street) and it is possibly on the site of an ancient inn or wine tavern which had a garden and was held by the Monastry of St John of Jerusalem, dating back to around 1640.
In the rear cobbled courtyard can still be seen some of the buildings which would have been stables and storage for horses, fodder, and tack. Although it was not on the inter-city mail routes there would have been a constant demand for transport by horse or carriage for connections to the main stagecoach stops or to other parts of the county and surrounding area.
This part of the High Street and the adjoining buildings are amongst the oldest in Berkeley. Both of Jenner's brother’s houses were further down High Street. He also lived there for some time, and the Chantry, his home for 38 years, are all within walking distance. He would undoubtedly have walked past this building on the High Street regularly and ridden this way on his visits to patients in his medical practice far flung around Gloucestershire.
The next location is in through the entrance to White Hart Court, on the left-hand side of the cobbled yard above the Tomato Jacks Art studio. You can click the QR code on the Plaque or click here for information on Location 5.
